How can I set up a wireless (wi-fi) connection?
Wireless encryption prevents anyone who doesn't know your wireless security key from accessing your network. Your initial encryption key is written on your hub and you'll need it to connect to your hub.
To set up your wireless connection:
- Unplug any cables that connect your computer to your hub.
- If you've a laptop/PC that was bought in the last few years, and still has the original operating system (such as Windows or Mac OS) installed, your wireless adapter may already be set up, skip to step 4.
- Install and set up the wireless adapter and drivers onto your computer. If you're not sure how to do this, see the instructions supplied with the wireless adapter.
- If your laptop/PC has a wireless switch, switch it on.
- Now select your computer’s operating system from the list below and follow the steps:
- Click Start - usually found on the bottom left of your computer screen.
- Select Connect To.
- In Windows XP, click Wireless Network Connection.
In Windows Vista, click Connect to network. - Select your hub’s network name from the list.
- Click Connect.
- Depending on your operating system, enter your hub's wireless key in the Network Key, Security key or Passphrase field.
- Click Connect and wait a few minutes while your computer connects to your hub.
- Click Start - usually found on the bottom left of your computer screen.
- Type connect in the field displayed (do not press the ENTER key).
- Click Connect to a network.
- A dialog box will appear on the lower-right part of your screen, look for your hub’s network name.
- If you don't see your hub’s network name, click on refresh in the top right corner of the dialog box.
- Click on your hub’s network name.
- Click Connect.
- Enter your hub's wireless key in Security key.
- Click OK.
- Wait a few minutes while your computer connects.
- Click on the AirPort status icon in the menu bar.
- Select your hub’s network name.
- If you're a Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier user, select WEP from the Wireless Security list.
- If the WEP 40/128-bit hex option doesn't appear on your version of Mac OS X, select WEP Password and enter $ in Password followed by the 10 character security key.
- In Password, enter your hub’s wireless key.
- Click OK and wait a few minutes while your computer connects.
- Open a browser to check you're on the Internet. If you can't connect to the Internet, restart your computer and try these steps again. Once you've connected, see Increasing the security of your wireless network.
