What should I do if I experience problems with the KiloStream service?

If you think there’s a problem with your KiloStream private circuit or with your NTU, please try the checks below as you may be able to solve the problem yourself.

If a fault proves to be in your terminal equipment or on-site wiring, rather than in the private circuit, BT reserves the right to charge for time spent on a visit to your premises. It’s in your interest to carry out these checks first.

If you have an NTU 6, please try the following checks:

No lights are on and the LCD is blank.

There is no power to the NTU.

Switch the power on and check all of the connections.

The message S: NTU NOT READY is displayed and the FAULT light is on.

There is a fault on the circuit.

Check all of the connections to the NTU and then report the fault to your service centre.

The message S: NTU NOT READY is displayed and the FAULT and RXD lights are on.

The TX NRDY button or local loop has been operated at the distant NTU.

Ask the distant user to check their NTU.

The message S: NTU NOT READY is displayed and the RX NRDY light is on.

The distant Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) is not connected.

Ask the distant user to check their DTE.

The message S: LOOP ACTIVE is displayed and the TM light is on.

A remote loop has been activated at the distant end.

Ask the distant user to check.

The message S: RECEIVE DATA message is displayed and the TX NRDY and RXD lights are on.

The TX NRDY button has been operated on the local NTU.

Deselect the TX NRDY button.

The message S: RECEIVE DATA is displayed and the RXD light is on.

The local DTE is not raising a ‘request to send’ signal.

Check with your DTE supplier.


If you have an NTU 7, please try the following checks:

There is an internal EPROM fault.

Operation isn’t possible. If the problem persists, please report this fault to your Service Management Centre.

The FAULT and 128k lights are on.

There is an internal RAM fault.

Operation isn’t possible. If the problem persists, please report this fault to your Service Management Centre.

The FAULT and 192k lights are on.

There is an internal framer fault.

Operation isn’t possible. If the problem persists, please report this fault to your Service Management Centre.

The FAULT and 256k lights are on.

There is an internal EEPROM fault.

Operation is possible.

Some of the lights are flashing in sequence.

The lights are faulty.

Operation is possible.

All of the lights are flashing in sequence.

A test is in progress.

Operation is possible.
