BlackBerry 6 - setting up your phone

If your network status is displayed as gprs, edge or 3g (in lower case) you will need to register your handset.

If your network status is displayed as GPRS, EDGE or 3G (in upper case) you can set up your smartphone for email, contacts and wi-fi. Simply follow the steps below:

To set up email:

  1. Press the Menu button Image and select Maximise Panel.
  2. Select the Setup icon Image
  3. Select Email Accounts.
  4. The email wizard will ask you to select the email type from a list including:
    Yahoo mail
    Google
    AOL
    Windows Live (Hotmail)
    Other (this will include most POP or IMAP mailboxes)
  5. Or select Create New Address (to create a @bt.blackberry.com address).
  6. Enter your email address and password.
    Your BlackBerry will attempt to setup the mailbox automatically for you. If this is successful you will get a set up confirmation message.
  7. You may now add additional email accounts, if required.

If your setup is successful you will receive delivery of new emails to your BlackBerry within 20 minutes.

If the wizard does not complete auto setup you will be asked to supply additional information such as the incoming mail server. If you do not know any of the details requested please contact your email service provider.


To import your contacts from your SIM card:

  1. Press the Menu button Image and select Maximise Panel.
  2. Select the Setup icon Image
  3. Select SIM Contacts Sync and follow the on screen prompts.

If your contacts are stored in Microsoft Outlook or another supported email client you can import them by installing BlackBerry Desktop software on the PC.  Download the free BlackBerry Desktop software

To set-up a Wi-Fi connection:

  1. Press the Menu button Image and select Maximise Panel.
  2. Select the Setup icon Image
  3. Select the Wi-Fi wizard and follow the on screen prompts to establish a wireless connection to your WLAN router.
