Upgrading from BT Business Email Lite to Office 365 Small Business Essentials

We're making some improvements to our Manage services website that'll make it easier to use. We've started to move customers to the new site but it's going to take a while until we move everyone over.  In the meantime, we're using two different sets of answers to some of our Frequently Asked Questions. This isn't ideal, we know.

To make sure you get the right answer to your question, we first need to check which Manage services website you're on.

Which Manage services website am I on?

  1. Sign in to Manage services
  2. Take a look at the screen you see after you've signed in
  3. Click on the image below that matches your actual Manage services screen (the new one has a purple right hand column titled Hello followed by your name)

We'll then show you the right answer to your question.

Click on the image above which is closest to the site you see after signing in. More help will then appear here.

A. Current Manage service website

You can only use your company domains (e.g.yourcompany.co.uk) with BT Business Lite or Microsoft Office 365. You cannot use them across both licence types.
If you want to use Office 365 but have an existing company domain set up for use with BT Business Lite email, you must deactivate your Lite licences before you can add your domain to your new Office 365 service.

Preparations: buy your Office 365 licences and back up your mailbox content

Before you start, make sure you’ve -

  1. Ordered Office 365
  2. Downloaded and backed up all of your mailbox content

De-activate your Business Email Lite mailboxes

  1. From Manage Services, click on Email Summary - this will display all mailboxes on the account
  2. Click on an email address to manage it
  3. Click on View license to confirm the license type on the highlighted email address
  4. Select De-activate mailbox
  5. Make sure you've backed up your account before continuing then click Yes (you'll see an on-screen confirmation)
  6. Repeat the process for all remaining mailboxes on your domain
  7. Click Yes when you see the final warning box
  8. All mailboxes on your domain are now inactive

Create your mailboxes with Office 365 Business Essentials

  2. Sign in with the admin login credentials that you received by email when you bought Office 365
  3. Set up your domain to your Office 365 Business Essentials/Premium product
  4. You’ll be able to build your different users and mailboxes, associating an Office 365 licence for each of the users
