How do I make sure my website is secure?

This is quite a complex area and will partially depend on what program you used to build your site.

General tips for all sites

  • Make sure any passwords you are secure. Ideally at least 8 characters, a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters with at least one number and punctuation if possible. An example password might be 1:L0v3;BTH05t!ng.
  • Make sure any computer or device you use to access your website using a password is secure and any anti-virus software required is up to date.
  • Backup your site regularly. That way if anything does go wrong you can restore it pretty quickly

Content Management System (CMS)

If you're using a Content Management System (CMS) such as Joomla or WordPress these are often more hackable than a standard or entirely custom built website. Fortunately there are some steps you can do to start making your site much more secure:

  • Check the official forums for your CMS. Whilst we can provide some support you'll usually find a wealth of information for your CMS and lots of helpful people on the official forums like the Joomla Forum.
  • Keep your CMS and any extensions up to date. Look on the official CMS website for the most recent stable version and information on how to update your site.
  • Protect your administrative pages and restrict access to any files containing information critical to your website.
